Why do library hours sometimes change?

Answer

Library hours are determined by several factors:

  1. Staffing Levels: We strive to maintain adequate staffing to provide quality service and ensure the safety and security of our patrons and resources.
  2. Building Usage: We regularly analyze usage patterns to optimize our hours. This helps us allocate resources efficiently and be open when students need us most.
  3. Hourly Headcounts: We track the number of visitors throughout the day to identify peak usage times and adjust our hours accordingly.
  4. Emergency Events: The library will close upon the determination that environmental conditions are unsafe.  Our website will communicate the changes as soon as possible and will be updated regularly.
  5. Staff Trainings and College Events: Occasionally, the library and other College offices will close to accommodate a scheduled professional development or other campus event.  Notice is posted on the website in advance to minimize any inconvenience to our users.
  6. Extended Hours for Finals: We typically offer extended hours during finals weeks. These extended hours will be announced on our website, social media channels, and through campus-wide emails.

How do you determine peak usage times?

We use a combination of methods to track library usage:

  • Automated door counters
  • Regular headcounts conducted by staff
  • Circulation statistics

This data helps us identify trends and make informed decisions about operating hours.
